Three new Plein Air paintings Just on time for the Holidays

The unusual mild Fall we’ve been experiencing here in the Northeast has made it difficult to get into a Winter mode. At least until this week… With temperatures getting more seasonal by the day, constant reminders that the Holiday Season is upon us, first snowfalls that are here to stay for a while, I thought I would start my winter musings also and work on a series of snow scenes that have caught my artistic imagination. These Plein Air paintings would make excellent Holiday gifts for yourself or that most special person on your list. Time however is running out, so if you do wish to receive the paintings in time for the Holidays, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can send them out in a timely manner.

In the first image titled December Snow the stream is almost entirely engulfed by the icy blanket of Winter. The inspiration for the second painting Where Did He Go? came from a familiar scene we all got accustomed of finding after a heavy snowfall, often the only sign that other creatures share our surroundings. Finally in Back Country Winter the sinuous winding of the river sculpted by the ice and snow formation, offered me a new perspective on a familiar scene. All three Plein Air paintings measure 9″x12″ and come framed in a custom made frame. The framed price for each is $600 (plus shipping).

If you are not familiar with the technique of Plein Air paintings this is a quick explanation of it. “Plein Air” is a French phrase for painting out in nature and receiving inspiration directly from the landscape itself. The fleeting and beautiful effects of light and shadow as they change, the movement of clouds and sky, are all challenging aspects that the artist deals with in creating a successful plein air work of art. A true plein air painting is created in one painting session lasting just a few hours. Plein Air paintings are usually smaller paintings. The panel size is not larger than 11”x14” or 12”x16” with commonly used sizes being 8″x10″ and 9″x12″. The smaller sizes allow to better capture the true spirit of “plein air” in that they can be painted in a short time, and require no adjustments for changing light and weather conditions. Plein Air paintings are characterized by bold brush strokes using big brushes, fresh paint application and spontaneity. Fresh paint application means loading the brush with paint and then putting the paint down onto the painting surface with confidence, with no second guessing or revised strokes. Vibrant color mixing is done quickly from a limited palette of colors.
