From the Keys to the Adirondacks – Adriano Manocchia's Artist Corner

As the dog days of Summer descend on us, I find myself often thinking of times spent fishing for bonefish and tarpon in the soft ocean breeze of the Bahamas. It has been awhile since I last painted salt water fishing images and thought this was the right time to work on some new paintings. I took several trips to the flats through the years to work on specific commissions and of course I had to experience first hand the thrill of catching a bonefish, a permit and tarpon. You’ll understand, I’m sure… Sight casting on the flats is like no other fishing experience. Your guide will direct the skiff in shallow water and when he reaches his destination he will stop the boat and trim the motor up and begin to pole across these shallow water flats. From a platform high above you he can see the fish at a further distance and can tell you in which direction to cast and how far the oncoming fish is. Sometimes you will see the fish easily and sometimes you will wonder how your guide can see the elusive target. In “Last Shot” the angler’s has just cast his line and is ready for the catch.

This is also the time of year when our trips to the Adirondacks become more frequent. The cool mountain air is always a welcome respite from the hot days in the valley. I’ve always been fascinated by the elegance of birch trees. These trees are a favorite of mine and often the subject of my paintings. Their white bark has an amazing reflecting quality when hit by the light that changes with the time of day. In “Birches” the dark foliage of the dense forest in the background, emphasizes the whiteness of the trees as they are lit by the sun while the wildflowers in full bloom offer a splash of subtle color.
